Kei Nishikori made an encouraging return in his first tournament in nearly four months, battling to an impressive three-set victory in the opening round in Washington. The Japanese veteran should benefit from that valuable match time and could improve as he gets more competitive tennis under his belt.
The challenge becomes considerably tougher against a younger, in-form top-30 opponent, but Nishikori's vast experience on North American hard courts and excellent history in Washington give him every chance of making this highly competitive.
Nishikori Seeks A Return To Winning Ways

Jodar Eyes First Hard-Court Quarterfinal
Rafael Jodar defeated Arthur Fils in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, to move into the second round in Washington on his tournament debut. He saved four of the five break points he faced and converted three of the 10 opportunities he created during the match.
The 19-year-old has showcased his impressive potential this season and climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 23 after reaching at least the quarterfinals in five ATP events. His breakthrough campaign includes his maiden ATP title in Marrakech, quarterfinal appearances in Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros.
What makes his rise even more remarkable is that he had not won a tour-level main-draw match before 2026. He played six hard-court events earlier this season but registered multiple main-draw wins only once, reaching the third round in Miami before elevating his level during the clay swing.
Jodar is now bidding to reach the first ATP Tour hard-court quarterfinal of his career.

Kei Nishikori Earns Long-Awaited Tour Victory
Kei Nishikori defeated Juncheng Shang in a hard-fought three-set comeback, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, to reach the second round in Washington. Impressively, the Japanese did not face a single break point throughout the match and converted two of his nine break-point opportunities.
The victory was Nishikori's first tour-level win since Geneva last year. Due to recurring fitness issues and inconsistent form, he spent much of the early part of the season competing on the Challenger Tour, where all five of his appearances ended without multiple wins.
Nishikori is now looking to reach his first ATP Tour quarterfinal since Hong Kong in January 2025.
