Brandon Nakashima reached the quarterfinals in Washington last year and has considerably more experience at this tournament, while Jakub Mensik is making his debut at the event. The conditions could also favor the American, as Mensik has often struggled physically in demanding heat and humidity. With Nakashima comfortable on home hard courts and available at underdog odds, the value appears to be on his side.

Nakashima Seeks A Home Breakthrough In Washington

  • Nakashima has failed to win multiple matches in seven of his last nine events.
  • He has lost 15 of his last 17 matches against Top 20 players.
  • Mensik has won 14 of his last 16 matches against American opponents.
  • He has a 20–7 record against players outside the Top 20 in 2026.

Nakashima Seeks Repeat Quarterfinal Run

Brandon Nakashima moved into the second round in Washington after defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4. The American dropped his serve once and converted all three break points he created during the match.

Nakashima has been reliable in opening-round matches this season but has often fallen short of making deep runs. He has played 14 tournaments and registered multiple main-draw wins at only four of them, highlighted by a runner-up finish in Brisbane, semifinal appearances in Acapulco and Queen's Club, and a third-round run at the French Open.

He is now looking to reach his second Washington quarterfinal. Last year, he defeated Ethan Quinn and Cameron Norrie in straight sets before his run ended in the quarterfinals.

Mensik Targets Strong Hard-Court Swing

Jakub Mensik enjoyed an outstanding start to the season, winning the Auckland title, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open, the semifinals in Doha, and the quarterfinals in Dubai. Those results helped him climb to a career-high ranking of No. 12.

However, an early exit during his Miami title defense saw him slip close to dropping out of the top 20. He quickly recovered by producing the best Grand Slam result of his career with a semifinal run at Wimbledon, which helped him regain his place inside the top 20.

Last year, Mensik failed to win multiple matches at any of his North American hard-court events. He will be aiming to change that this week as he looks to rebuild his hard-court momentum.

Verdict

This should still be a closely contested matchup with tight sets, but Nakashima has enough working in his favor to hold the edge. Backing Brandon Nakashima to win, over 22.5 games in the match, and a tiebreak to be played are all worth considering.
