Alexander Zverev is a two-time champion in Madrid, while Alexander Blockx is playing his first-ever main tour semifinal. However, Zverev’s recent struggles in semifinal stages make him difficult to fully trust at such a short price.

Blockx Tests Elite Resilience

  • Alexander Blockx has won 7 of his last 9 semifinals at lower-level events.
  • He has won 4 of his last 6 matches against Top 20 players.
  • Alexander Zverev is on a six-match losing streak in semifinals (tour & Masters).
  • He has a 31–3 record against outside Top 50 players in Masters since 2022.

Blockx Delivers Another Big Upset

Alexander Blockx stunned defending champion Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinals in Madrid. He won 85% of his first-serve points and converted three of seven break chances in a composed performance.

His path to the semifinals has been exceptional, with wins over Brandon Nakashima, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Francisco Cerundolo earlier this week. Notably, three of those victories came in straight sets.

The 21-year-old’s rise has been rapid. He earned his first tour-level win just eight months ago in Cincinnati and recorded back-to-back wins on tour for the first time only in Monte Carlo a few weeks ago. Now, he has surged all the way into a Masters semifinal.

These results will push him to a career-high ranking of No. 35 next week. Remarkably, before April he had not beaten a top-50 player, but he has now won six of his last eight matches against that level of opposition.

Blockx has also shown strong form at lower levels, winning seven of his last nine semifinals on the Challenger circuit. With that confidence and his current momentum, he now eyes a maiden tour-level final this week.

Zverev Reaches Fifth Straight Semifinal

Alexander Zverev took revenge on Flavio Cobolli for his Munich semifinal loss by winning 6-1, 6-4 in Madrid. He fired 12 aces and saved both break points he faced. This marks his fifth consecutive Masters semifinal.

Zverev has a strong record in Madrid semifinals, having played three before and converting all of them into finals, including title wins in 2018 and 2021. With a favorable matchup ahead, he will be confident of repeating that success.

The German has been one of the most consistent players on tour since last year, regularly reaching the latter stages of tournaments. However, his main issue remains converting those deep runs into titles, especially against top-level opposition.

He has played 11 semifinals in the past 12 months but lost nine of them, including all five this year, highlighting his recent struggles at this stage.

At Masters level, Zverev was dominant earlier in his career, winning nine of his first 11 semifinals and converting five into titles. In contrast, he has won just three of his last 15 semifinals at this level, turning only one into a title in the past five years.
