Jack Draper is an elite grass-court player and a genuine contender whenever he competes on this surface. The concern, however, is always his fitness and lack of match rhythm, as injuries have severely limited his playing time in recent months. That lack of match practice leaves him in a vulnerable position against an opponent as solid and reliable as Brandon Nakashima.

Nakashima Faces Tough Opening Test

  • Nakashima holds a 10–3 record in opening-round matches this year.
  • He owns a 5–2 record against players outside the Top 100 in 2026.
  • Draper reached the semifinals in his only previous Eastbourne appearance in 2022.
  • He has won eight of his last nine matches against American opponents.

Brandon Nakashima Continues Wimbledon Build-Up

Brandon Nakashima made a strong start to the grass-court season at Queen's Club, reaching the semifinals with notable victories along the way, including a win over Alex de Minaur. His run ended against Francisco Cerundolo, despite taking the opening set.

The American also reached the third round at Roland Garros last month. Those results were encouraging after an inconsistent start to the season, where he struggled to put together deep runs on a regular basis.

Before the French Open, Nakashima had played 11 tournaments and recorded multiple main-draw wins at only two of them. His best results during that period were a runner-up finish in Brisbane and a semifinal appearance in Acapulco, highlighting the difficulty he had in building momentum from week to week.

Nakashima will now look to carry his recent form into Wimbledon preparations. He has played Eastbourne twice before and has managed just one main-draw victory at the event.

Jack Draper Seeks Fresh Start on Grass

Jack Draper returned from an arm injury in February after spending more than six months on the sidelines. However, his comeback was interrupted by a knee injury suffered in Barcelona just two months later, keeping him out of action until this week.

The Briton has played only four tournaments this season. His best result was a quarterfinal appearance at Indian Wells, while he also reached the second round in Dubai and suffered first-round exits in Miami and Barcelona. With limited opportunities to defend ranking points, he has slipped outside the top 150.

This will be just Draper's second appearance in Eastbourne. He made his debut in 2022 and enjoyed a breakthrough run to the semifinals, which was the first tour-level semifinal of his career.

Verdict

While Draper has the weapons to make a fast start, Nakashima's consistency and recent match sharpness could prove decisive over the course of the contest. Backing Draper to win the first set, over 22.5 games in the match, Nakashima to win the match, and Nakashima to win 2-1 are the selections that stand out most based on the likely match dynamics.
