Dusan Lajovic is no longer at his peak, and the 36-year-old has struggled for consistent results this season, losing more matches than he has won. However, the Serbian knows the conditions in Umag extremely well and will also benefit from home support. Against Luca Van Assche, who has had his own fitness concerns throughout the year, Lajovic looks capable of taking advantage.

Lajovic Seeks Another Umag Success

  • Dusan Lajovic holds a 5–4 record in opening-round matches at Umag.
  • He has a 3–7 record against Top 100 players in 2026.

Lajovic Hopes to Recapture Past Success

Dusan Lajovic lost both of his matches at Wimbledon last week. He was beaten by Vilius Gaubas in the final round of qualifying but received a place in the main draw as a lucky loser, where he lost to Taylor Fritz in straight sets.

The Serbian has played 17 events across all levels this season and has registered multiple main-draw wins only twice, reaching the Challenger quarterfinals in Canberra and Valencia. Those disappointing results have seen him drop outside the top 150 in the rankings.

This is his 10th main-draw appearance in Umag. He owns a 5-4 record in opening-round matches here, with his best result coming when he lifted the 2019 title.

Van Assche Looks to Regain Momentum

Luca Van Assche retired from his opening-round match against Marton Fucsovics at Wimbledon while trailing by a set and 0-4 due to a back injury. He will now be looking to regain his momentum.

The 22-year-old started the season strongly by winning Challenger titles in Quimper and Lille, while also reaching the quarterfinals in Marrakech. However, he has struggled for consistency in recent weeks, failing to win multiple matches in eight of his last nine tournaments.

This is Van Assche's third appearance in Umag. His previous two visits ended without a main-draw victory, as he lost in the first round in 2024 and in the qualifying stages in 2025.

Verdict

With the home advantage and greater experience at this venue working in his favor, Lajovic stands out as a value underdog. Backing Lajovic to win looks like the right play at the current odds.
