Khachanov Finds Winning Rhythm Again

Karen Khachanov defeated Adam Walton 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets to reach the third round in Madrid. He saved all four break points he faced and converted four of his 10 chances.

With this victory, he snapped a three-match losing streak on tour, which included opening-round exits in both Monte Carlo and Barcelona during the clay swing.

Apart from a third-round run at the Australian Open and a quarterfinal in Doha, he has struggled to win multiple matches this season. While his ranking has not dropped significantly, he needs to regain rhythm and confidence before the demanding weeks ahead.

Khachanov enters this clash with a 5-5 record in third-round matches at clay Masters events, although he has won five of his last six at this stage.

Mensik Begins Clay Swing Positively

Jakub Mensik began his clay season in Madrid after a month-long break and opened with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Martin Damm. He saved both break points and won an impressive 88% of his first-serve points.

The Czech had a strong start to the season, winning the Auckland title and reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open, along with a semifinal in Doha and a quarterfinal in Dubai.

However, his level dropped in recent weeks with back-to-back early exits, including a disappointing title-defense loss in Miami, which pushed him outside the top 20 in the rankings.

Mensik holds a 4-5 record in third-round matches at Masters level and has lost his last four at this stage. His most recent win in a Masters third round came in Rome last year.

Verdict

In altitude conditions, Mensik’s serve should be a major weapon and give him a clear edge. Mensik to win and to win in straight sets both stand out as the more convincing plays in this matchup.
