Alexander Zverev is not in the best form right now and has shown some vulnerability, but his opponent Terence Atmane does not appear in a strong position to capitalize, especially after struggling physically with cramps late in his opening match against Ugo Humbert.

Zverev Guards Madrid Advantage

  • Terence Atmane is 2–1 in third-round matches at Masters events.
  • He has a 3–5 career record against Top 10 players, with all three wins coming in Masters events.
  • Alexander Zverev is 5–3 in R16 matches in Madrid.
  • He has a 26–2 record against outside Top 10 players in Masters events over the last 12 months.

Atmane Stuns Humbert In Madrid

Terence Atmane moved into the third round after defeating Ugo Humbert 7-6, 7-6 in Madrid. He served seven aces and saved five of the seven break points he faced in the match.

This is only the second time he has recorded multiple main-draw wins in a tour-level clay event. He previously achieved that in Rome two years ago before losing to Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.

The 24-year-old had a slow start to the season with a winless Australian swing, but he responded well in North America by reaching the quarterfinals in Acapulco and the fourth round in Miami. Along with his breakthrough semifinal in Cincinnati, those results helped him break into the top 50 recently.

Zverev Continues Strong Madrid Tradition

Alexander Zverev began his Madrid campaign with a three-set win over Mariano Navone, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. He served eight aces and won 75% of his first-serve points.

This is his ninth consecutive round-of-16 appearance in Madrid. He won his first five matches at this stage, including two title runs, but has lost his last three, twice to Francisco Cerundolo in 2024 and 2025, and to Carlos Alcaraz in 2023.

The 29-year-old has reached at least the semifinals in his last four Masters tournaments, and notably all four runs ended against Jannik Sinner in the final four stage.

Apart from a second-round loss in Acapulco, Zverev has made the semifinals in all five of his other events this season and will look to continue that strong pattern this week.

Verdict

With his strong record at this venue and consistent deep runs this season, Zverev is expected to take control. Backing Zverev to win in straight sets looks like the most logical option here.
