Roman Safiullin is a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist and arrives in the second round full of confidence after a stunning five-set victory over top-20 player Andrey Rublev. Roman Safiullin Stuns Rublev at Wimbledon
Roman Safiullin produced one of the biggest upsets of the opening round at Wimbledon, saving two match points to defeat 12th seed Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-7, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. The Russian held his nerve in the deciding-set tie-break to book his place in the second round.
He has spent much of the season on the Challenger Tour, winning titles in Oeiras and Mauthausen before coming through the Wimbledon qualifying draw. His victory over Rublev was his first ATP Tour main-draw win since last year's US Open and the biggest win of his season.
Safiullin holds a 2-1 record in second-round matches at Wimbledon. His best result came in 2023 when he reached the quarterfinals, and he will now be looking to reach the third round here for the third time.
