Tommy Paul barely survived his second-round match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and with the level he is currently operating at, there appears to be plenty of value on Daniel Altmaier here. Altmaier is a dangerous clay-court player, enjoys playing in Germany, and has already been a quarterfinalist in Hamburg before.

Paul Survives Epic Battle
Tommy Paul defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 to reach the quarterfinals in Hamburg. He saved two match points in the second set and three more in the decider to complete a dramatic comeback victory.
This is Paul’s best result in Hamburg. He arrived this week after disappointing campaigns in Madrid and Rome, where he failed to defend major ranking points and slipped out of the top 20.
Despite those recent setbacks, the American has still enjoyed a strong 2026 season with a title in Houston, a final in Delray Beach, a semifinal in Adelaide and a quarterfinal in Miami, along with a fourth-round run at the Australian Open.
Paul now carries a 5-3 record in tour-level clay quarterfinals. Notably, two of those three defeats came against Carlos Alcaraz.

Altmaier Earns Big Upset
Daniel Altmaier came from a set down to defeat Ben Shelton 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 and reach the quarterfinals in Hamburg. Shelton served for the match in the second set, but Altmaier fought back to complete the comeback victory.
This is only the second time Altmaier has recorded multiple wins in Hamburg across eight appearances. He previously reached the quarterfinals in 2023 after defeating world No. 7 Andrey Rublev in the second round before losing to Zhang Zhizhen.
The result is especially important for the German after a difficult start to the season. He opened 2026 with eight consecutive defeats and had managed multiple wins in only two events before this week, reaching the Naples Challenger final and the Bucharest quarterfinals.
Altmaier has now reached 12 tour-level quarterfinals in his career but lost 10 of them, including each of his last nine. His most recent quarterfinal victories came in Umag and Kitzbuhel back in 2021.
