Devin Haney vs Vasyl Lomachenko Preview & Picks

Devin Haney is tipped to retain his undisputed lightweight crown.

Haney is in his prime and boasts a huge reach advantage that can help him control the contest.

Vasyl Lomachenko has lost a step or two in recent years too, so a decision win for the champion is likely.

  • Devin Haney has a perfect 29-0 professional record
  • Each of Haney’s last 6 wins have come by decision
  • Devin Haney boasts a 5 ½ inch reach advantage
  • Both of Vasyl Lomachenko’s losses have come by decision

Devin Haney Form

Devin Haney is the undisputed world lightweight champion with a professional record of 29-0 (15 KOs).

Haney became a world champion for the first time in September 2019 when he stopped Zaur Abdullaev in the fourth round to win the interim WBC lightweight title.

That was later upgraded to a full championship and he made four successful defences of the belt.

Alfredo Santiago, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Jorge Linares and Joseph Diaz Jr were all beaten by unanimous decision.

Those wins set up a unification fight against George Kambosos Jr in June 2022, with Haney travelling to his opponents’ homeland, Australia, for the contest.

‘The Dream’ left Melbourne as the WBC, WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine titles thanks to a unanimous decision victory.

Haney then headed back to Australia in October of last year for the immediate rematch, and he again left as the undisputed lightweight champion thanks to a unanimous decision win.

Vasyl Lomachenko Form

Vasyl Lomachenko is a former three-weight world champion with a professional record of 17-2 (11 KOs).

Lomachenko quickly established himself as one of the best fighters on the planet after debuting in the pro ranks in 2013.

He very quickly won world titles at both featherweight and junior lightweight, before moving up to lightweight.

In his first fight in his new weight class, ‘Loma’ knocked out Jorge Linares in the 10th round to win the WBA (Super) and Ring Magazine titles.

He then added the WBO title by beating Jose Pedraza by unanimous decision in December 2018.

Lomachenko knocked out Anthony Crolla inside four rounds to retain all three belts the following April, and four months later he added the WBC belt thanks to a decision win over Luke Campbell.

However, his reign as world lightweight champion was brought to a shuddering halt in October 2020.

The 35-year-old Ukrainian lost a unification fight with IBF champion Teofimo Lopez, coming out on the wrong end of a judges’ decision.

Lomachenko has rebounded since though, following up a ninth round stoppage of Masayoshi Nakatani with unanimous decision wins over Richard Commey and Jamaine Ortiz.

Verdict

These two fighters are heading in opposite directions, with Haney entering his prime and Lomachenko winding down.

This is likely to be Haney’s ‘coming out’ party, with the American earning the decision from the judges.
