Spaniard Hoping to Repeat Last Year's Success
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina made a strong start to the season, reaching the semifinals in Adelaide, the quarterfinals in Dallas and the fourth round at Indian Wells. However, injury problems have disrupted his progress since March.
The Spaniard struggled throughout the clay swing, failing to record multiple wins in any of his four clay-court tournaments. Those results contributed to his drop out of the Top 20 in the rankings.
Grass has not traditionally been his strongest surface, and he often starts the swing later than most players. However, he enjoyed a breakthrough on the surface last year, reaching his first grass-court semifinal in Eastbourne and the third round at Wimbledon.
With important ranking points to defend over the coming weeks, Davidovich Fokina has opted to begin his grass-court season early in Stuttgart. A few wins would help him rebuild confidence and ease the pressure heading into the rest of the summer.

Italian Searches for Consistency on Tour
Mattia Bellucci began his grass-court season at the Birmingham Challenger following an opening-round exit at Roland Garros, but his campaign ended quickly with a straight-set loss to Alex Bolt. It was his fourth first-round defeat in his last six tournaments.
The Italian has produced some encouraging results on the Challenger Tour this season, reaching at least the semifinals on three occasions. However, he has struggled to translate that success to tour-level events, clearing the opening-round hurdle in only three of his 12 tournaments.
