  • Kovacevic enters the Hamburg semifinals as a lucky loser on a winning streak
  • Buse breaks into the Top 50 after a resilient quarterfinal win
  • Backing Kovacevic with a +3.5 game handicap is suggested in this tight matchup

Ignacio Buse is clearly the superior clay-court player in this matchup, but the gap between these two players at the moment does not feel large enough to justify him being such a short-priced favorite. That removes much of the value from backing Buse outright here. Meanwhile, Aleksandar Kovacevic arrives with excellent momentum after picking up several impressive wins in recent rounds.

Kovacevic Tests Buse Momentum

  • Aleksandar Kovacevic holds a 2–2 semifinal record on tour.
  • He owns an 8–9 record against Top 100 players this year.
  • Ignacio Buse is 0–2 in tour-level semifinals.
  • He has a 12–6 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.

Kovacevic Thriving As Lucky Loser

Aleksandar Kovacevic reached the semifinals in Hamburg after defeating Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. He had the opportunity to close the match in straight sets but eventually needed three sets to finish the job.

The American has produced an incredible turnaround this week after losing to Arthur Gea in the final qualifying round. Entering the main draw as a lucky loser, he made the most of the opportunity by winning three matches, including a comeback victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime.

What makes the run even more impressive is that Kovacevic had never previously won a match on European clay before this week. He arrived in Hamburg on a 10-match losing streak in such events but is now one step away from reaching a final on the surface.

Kovacevic now owns a 2-2 career record in tour-level semifinals. All four of his previous semifinals came on hard courts, with the most recent ending in a loss to Brandon Nakashima in Brisbane.

Buse Breaks Into Top Fifty

Ignacio Buse booked his place in the semifinals in Hamburg after a gruelling 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over Ugo Humbert. After missing the chance to close out the match in straight sets, he recovered from a 0-3 deficit in the deciding set to complete the comeback.

Buse’s path to the semifinals has been far from easy. Earlier this week, he defeated Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik in straight sets. Before this tournament, he had never beaten back-to-back top-50 players in his career.

The Peruvian has shown steady progress at tour level over recent months. He enjoyed a breakthrough semifinal run in Gstaad last year and repeated that result in Rio de Janeiro earlier this season, while also collecting a few wins at Masters events.

With this run, Buse is now set to break into the top 50 rankings for the first time next week. He will also be aiming to reach his maiden tour-level final after losing his previous two semifinals.

Verdict

Riding with Kovacevic’s current confidence and momentum looks like the better approach here. Backing Kovacevic to cover the +3.5 games handicap, a tiebreak to be played, and over 21.5 games all look like appealing options in what could turn into a very competitive contest.
