This should be a very competitive battle between Casper Ruud and Joao Fonseca, with Fonseca arriving on the back of a hugely confidence-boosting five-set win over Novak Djokovic in the previous round. While this matchup could realistically swing either way, both players are also coming into it after physically demanding contests, which could have a major influence on how the later stages unfold.

Road To The Last Eight

  • Casper Ruud holds a 4–3 record in Grand Slam Round of 16 matches.
  • He owns an 18–6 record against players outside the Top 20 this year.
  • Joao Fonseca has a 2–6 career record against Top 10 players.
  • He is chasing his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

This will be their first meeting.

Ruud Escapes Against Tommy Paul

Casper Ruud produced a remarkable comeback from two sets down to defeat Tommy Paul 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-5. He fired 17 aces and converted all three break-point chances he created during the match.

This was Ruud's second five-set battle of the tournament. He also needed five sets to get past Roman Safiullin in the opening round, a match where he struggled with heat issues and cramps.

This is Ruud's fourth Round of 16 appearance at Roland Garros and he has converted all three of his previous appearances into at least a semifinal run, including finals in 2023 and 2024. With several top contenders already out of the draw, he has another big opportunity this week.

The Norwegian made a slow start to the season but found his best level once the clay swing began. He reached the final in Rome, the semifinals in Geneva and the quarterfinals in Madrid before arriving in Paris.

Ruud owns a 4-3 record in Grand Slam fourth-round matches. He had lost his previous two at this stage, including at the Australian Open earlier this year, while his most recent Round of 16 win came here at Roland Garros in 2024.

Fonseca Stuns Djokovic in Paris

Joao Fonseca registered the biggest win of his career by defeating Novak Djokovic from two sets down, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5, to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros. He also recovered from a break down in the deciding set and snapped a six-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents.

Fonseca had already produced a similar comeback in the previous round against Dino Prizmic. After back-to-back early exits in Madrid and Rome, he has shown plenty of fight through the opening week in Paris.

The Brazilian made a slow start to the season and missed several tournaments due to back issues. However, his level improved once the tour moved into North America, with quarterfinal runs in Monte Carlo and Munich and a fourth-round appearance at Indian Wells.

This is the best Grand Slam result of his career. He had previously played two third-round matches at this level and lost both of them.

Verdict

Given the physical toll both players endured in the previous round, the chances of this match going all the way to a deciding fifth set may not be as high as expected, as neither player is likely to have much left physically for a full comeback effort deep into the contest. Backing under 41.5 games and under 4.5 sets stands out strongly here.
