Ben Shelton has enjoyed very limited success on European clay overall, but interestingly, most of his best results on the surface have come in Germany. He reached the final in Munich last year and went one better by winning the title there this season, showing a clear comfort level on German soil.

Clay Battle Awaits Shelton

  • Daniel Altmaier recorded multiple main-draw wins only once this year.
  • He owns a 4–5 career clay record against Top 50 players.
  • Ben Shelton failed to win multiple matches in five of his last six events.
  • He holds a 4–3 clay record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.

This will be their first meeting.

Altmaier Earns Strong Victory

Daniel Altmaier moved into the second round in Hamburg with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Rinky Hijikata. He fired seven aces and converted four of his nine break-point chances during the match.

The result was especially important for Altmaier as he had failed to clear the opening round in six of his previous seven appearances in Hamburg. The only time he advanced beyond the first round, he reached the quarterfinals in 2023.

The German endured a difficult start to 2026, losing in the opening round of his first tournaments. However, his form has improved during the European clay swing with a final in the Naples Challenger, a quarterfinal in Bucharest and main-draw wins in Rome and Munich.

Shelton Survives Tough Opener

Ben Shelton moved into the second round after defeating Marcos Giron in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. He saved two of the three break points he faced and converted his only break chance of the match.

Shelton is now aiming to win consecutive matches again, something he has failed to do in five of his last six events. The only exception was his title-winning run in Munich earlier this season.

Despite his recent inconsistency, the American enjoyed a strong start to 2026 with a quarterfinal run at the Australian Open and a title in Dallas. He will hope to rediscover that level this week.

Last year, Shelton also produced his best clay results in Munich, where he reached the final. Outside of that run and a fourth-round appearance at French Open, he struggled for consistency on the surface.

Verdict

With that strong record on German clay, Shelton has another good opportunity to make a deep run here against Daniel Altmaier in the second round. Shelton’s ability to find ways through matches against lower-ranked opponents keeps him as the preferred side in this matchup. Backing Shelton to win in straight sets and a tiebreak to be played both look like worthwhile options here.
