Ben Shelton arrives at the French Open lacking form, momentum, and confidence after losing three of his last four matches. All three defeats came in tight battles, including losses against lower-ranked opponents, which leaves him in a slightly vulnerable position heading into this matchup.

Clay Questions Surround Shelton

  • Daniel Merida Aguilar has never played a Grand Slam main-draw match.
  • Four of his six clay events this year ended without a main-draw win.
  • Ben Shelton has not lost a Grand Slam opening-round match since 2023.
  • Four of his five losses against players outside the Top 50 this year came on clay.

Merida Aguilar Enjoys Breakthrough Season

Daniel Merida Aguilar has enjoyed an excellent clay season, producing breakthrough results in recent months that helped him rise to a career-high ranking of No. 86.

The Spaniard began the year outside the top 150 and struggled during the opening weeks of the season. However, back-to-back semifinal runs at the Tenerife Challenger events gave him momentum, which he later built on with a maiden ATP final in Bucharest and a third-round appearance in Madrid.

This will be Merida Aguilar’s first Grand Slam main-draw appearance, earned directly through his improved ranking. He previously competed in qualifying at the US Open in 2025 and the Australian Open in 2026 but failed to progress on both occasions.

Shelton Aims To Bounce Back Quickly

Ben Shelton has endured a disappointing stretch in recent weeks, failing to record multiple wins in six of his last seven tournaments. That run included back-to-back opening-round exits in Madrid and Rome, with his title-winning campaign in Munich standing as the lone exception.

Despite the recent slump, Shelton enjoyed a strong start to the season with quarterfinal appearances in Auckland and the Australian Open along with a title in Dallas.

The American will need to quickly raise his level in Paris to regain momentum ahead of a demanding schedule over the coming months. He is also defending fourth-round ranking points from last year’s tournament.

This will be Shelton’s third appearance at French Open, and he has improved his result in every visit so far, first round in 2023, third round in 2024 and fourth round in 2025.

Verdict

Daniel Merida is a talented young player who has gained valuable confidence in recent weeks and generally looks very comfortable on European clay. That gives the Spaniard a genuine chance to challenge here.

Backing Merida to win over 16.5 games, win at least a set, push the total over 35.5 games, and even taking a small punt on the outright upset all look like appealing options.
