Felix Auger-Aliassime appears far more battle-tested and prepared for this clash after coming through several difficult matches in the early rounds of the tournament. In contrast, Flavio Cobolli has enjoyed a relatively straightforward path so far, and facing a player of Auger-Aliassime’s level represents an immediate and significant jump in complexity that he may struggle to handle.

Auger-Aliassime Stands Firm

  • Felix Auger-Aliassime holds a 2–2 record in Grand Slam quarterfinals.
  • He owns an 8–3 record against players outside the Top 10 this year.
  • Flavio Cobolli lost his only previous Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon last year.
  • He has a 3–18 career record against Top 10 players.

Auger-Aliassime Closes in on Top Four

Felix Auger-Aliassime reached the quarterfinals after defeating Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets at the French Open, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. He fired 17 aces and saved all three break points he faced during the match.

This is his best result at Roland Garros. He had previously reached the Round of 16 here twice but lost on both occasions. With this victory, Auger-Aliassime becomes the first Canadian in the Open Era to reach the quarterfinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments.

Despite enjoying an excellent season last year, he struggled on clay, failing to win a match in five of his six events on the surface. This season has been a different story, with a quarterfinal run in Monte Carlo, a third-round appearance in Madrid and now a breakthrough quarterfinal in Paris.

The 25-year-old also produced strong results earlier in the year, reaching the finals in Montpellier and Rotterdam, the semifinals in Dubai and the fourth round at Indian Wells. Combined with this run at Roland Garros, those results will lift him to a new career-high ranking of No. 4 next week.

Auger-Aliassime owns a 2-2 record in Grand Slam quarterfinals. Both of his victories at this stage came at the US Open.

Cobolli Back in a Major Quarterfinal

Flavio Cobolli defeated Zachary Svajda in four sets to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, 6-2, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. He nearly let a 5-1 lead slip away in the fourth set but recovered in the tiebreak to close out the match.

Cobolli's route to the quarterfinals has been relatively comfortable compared to many others in the draw. He faced three opponents ranked outside the Top 80 before meeting Learner Tien, who has limited experience on clay at the highest level.

The Italian will be pleased with the result considering he arrived in Paris after back-to-back early exits in Rome and Hamburg. Those setbacks followed some strong clay-court performances, including a runner-up finish in Munich and a quarterfinal run in Madrid.

The 24-year-old also produced notable results during the North American swing, reaching the semifinals in Delray Beach and the final in Acapulco. Those performances, combined with his run in Paris, will earn him a new career-high ranking next week and leave him close to a Top 10 debut.

This is only the second Grand Slam quarterfinal of Cobolli's career. His previous appearance came at Wimbledon last year, where he lost to then world No. 6 Novak Djokovic in four sets. He now faces another world No. 6 at the same stage this week.

Verdict

Auger-Aliassime has clearly improved as the tournament has progressed and now arrives with strong momentum and growing confidence. That makes him a very appealing option to back in this matchup. At the same time, over 39.5 games also deserves consideration, as both players are evenly matched in overall quality and neither appears likely to run away with an easy victory.
