The Italian has grown up on European clay and spent far more time developing his game on this surface. American Produces Another Five-Set Comeback
Frances Tiafoe moved into the fourth round after defeating Jaime Faria in five sets, 4-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2. He trailed by two sets and a break at one stage before producing a remarkable comeback to win comfortably in the end.
This was Tiafoe's second five-set victory of the week after his win over Hubert Hurkacz in the previous round. It is also his second Round of 16 appearance at Roland Garros. He first reached this stage last year and went on to defeat Daniel Altmaier before making the quarterfinals.
Apart from early exits in both of his European clay events before Paris, Tiafoe has enjoyed a solid season. His best results include a runner-up finish in Acapulco, a quarterfinal run in Miami and a fourth-round appearance at Indian Wells.
The American owns a 5-3 record in Grand Slam fourth-round matches. He is currently on a four-match winning streak at this stage, with his most recent defeat coming against David Goffin at Wimbledon in 2022.

Another Upset Sends Arnaldi Through
Matteo Arnaldi followed up his win over Stefanos Tsitsipas with another upset, defeating Raphael Collignon 6-4, 6-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 to reach the fourth round at the French Open. He fired 14 aces and saved seven of the 11 break points he faced during the match.
The run is particularly impressive considering Arnaldi failed to win a main-draw match in his first eight tournaments of the season and also dealt with injury issues early in the year.
His fortunes changed a few weeks ago when he captured the Cagliari Challenger title, followed by a third-round appearance in Rome and now this run in Paris.
The Italian has carried that momentum into Roland Garros and is playing some of his best tennis of the season at the right time.
Arnaldi heads into the fourth round with a 0-2 record in Grand Slam Round of 16 matches. His previous losses at this stage came against Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open in 2023 and Stefanos Tsitsipas at Roland Garros in 2024.

Verdict
In contrast to Arnaldi, Tiafoe has faced relatively manageable opponents but still needed to scrape through matches with performances that were far from convincing. If Arnaldi’s fitness holds up physically, he has a very strong chance of causing the upset and continuing his impressive clay-court surge. A small punt on Arnaldi to win along with over 3.5 sets in the match makes plenty of appeal here.
