Alexander Zverev has done a good job so far of taking advantage of the favorable draw and progressing through his matches without too many complications. However, this is where things could start to get tricky for him. Zverev has often struggled in semifinal matches throughout his career, both at Grand Slams and other major events, where the pressure tends to increase significantly.

On the other side stands Jakub Mensik, a player who already owns an impressive record against top names and has repeatedly shown that he thrives in the big matches.

A Battle For Paris Glory

  • Jakub Mensik holds a 3–2 record in tour-level semifinals.
  • He has lost six of his last eight matches against Top 10 players.
  • Alexander Zverev owns a 1–3 record in French Open semifinals.
  • He has a 30–2 record against players outside the Top 20 this year.

Young Czech Reaches Maiden Grand Slam Semifinal

Jakub Mensik moved into the semifinals at Roland Garros after defeating Joao Fonseca in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6. He fired 11 aces and won 83 percent of his first-serve points to seal the biggest win of his Grand Slam career.

With this victory, Mensik becomes the youngest Czech man in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam semifinal, surpassing the mark set by Ivan Lendl, who achieved the feat at Roland Garros in 1981.

The Czech looked in serious trouble physically after suffering severe cramps during his five-set win over Mariano Navone in the second round. However, he bounced back brilliantly, adding three more victories, including another five-set battle against Andrey Rublev in the Round of 16.

After a difficult second half of last season due to recurring physical setbacks, Mensik started 2026 strongly by winning the title in Auckland and reaching the semifinals in Doha and the quarterfinals in Dubai. More fitness issues interrupted his progress in recent months, but he has rediscovered his level at the perfect time.

This is the best Grand Slam result of Mensik's career, having never previously progressed beyond the fourth round at a major. He heads into the semifinals with a 3-2 record in tour-level semifinals.

Zverev Moves Closer to Maiden Major Title

Alexander Zverev secured his place in the semifinals after defeating rising youngster Rafael Jodar in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, 6-3 at the French Open. He dropped serve only once and broke his opponent five times during the match.

Zverev's path to the semifinals has been relatively smooth so far. He has yet to face a top-ranked opponent and has dropped only one set during the tournament, against Quentin Halys earlier in the event.

With the remaining three semifinalists all making their debut at this stage of a Grand Slam, this represents a huge opportunity for the German to finally capture his maiden major title. His experience in the latter stages of big tournaments could prove a decisive advantage.

The German arrives with remarkable consistency behind him. This is his ninth semifinal in his last 11 tournaments. Since winning the Munich title last year, he has reached 12 semifinals across all surfaces but has been unable to convert any of them into a title.

This is Zverev's fifth Roland Garros semifinal. He has won only one of his previous four, defeating Casper Ruud in 2024. Overall, he owns a 3-7 record in Grand Slam semifinals, with his most recent appearance ending in a loss to Carlos Alcaraz at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Verdict

Expecting Mensik to cause plenty of problems for the German, although Zverev's superior best-of-five experience should still help him find a way through. A tiebreak to be played, Zverev to win and over 35.5 games, and over 4.5 sets all make strong appeal for what should be a closely contested semifinal.
