Joao Fonseca has produced some incredibly high-quality tennis in his last two matches against Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud, and he must now be arriving into this quarterfinal with sky-high confidence after those stunning performances against proven Grand Slam players.
After overcoming challenges of that level, this matchup against Jakub Mensik, another first-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, should feel like a noticeable step down in overall quality and experience.
Young Guns Under Pressure
- Jakub Mensik holds a 5–9 record in tour-level quarterfinals.
- He owns a 17–5 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.
- Joao Fonseca has a 2–4 record in tour-level quarterfinals.
- He holds an 8–4 record against players outside the Top 20 on clay this year.

Mensik Survives Another Five-Set Battle
Jakub Mensik reached the quarterfinals at the French Open after defeating Andrey Rublev in five sets, 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3. He fired 13 aces and saved 10 of the 15 break points he faced to reach his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.
The Czech had suffered badly with cramps during his five-set victory over Mariano Navone earlier in the tournament and struggled to walk after that match. Fitness concerns surrounded him heading into the later rounds, but he responded by defeating Alex de Minaur and then surviving another five-set battle against Rublev.
The 20-year-old has repeatedly shown that he can compete with the best players in the world, but injuries and fitness setbacks have often interrupted his progress. He started the season strongly by winning the Auckland title and reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open before withdrawing with an abdominal injury.
His level dipped after that setback and he was unable to defend his title in Miami, which pushed him outside the Top 20. This run in Paris has put him in position to return to that group once again.
Mensik owns a 5-9 record in tour-level quarterfinals, including a 2-1 mark in 2026. One of those victories came against Jannik Sinner in Doha, one of the biggest wins of his career.

Brazilian Continues Stunning Paris Run
Joao Fonseca defeated a fatigued Casper Ruud in four sets, 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2, to book his place in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. He saved three set points in the second-set tiebreak, a moment that proved crucial in the outcome of the match.
The Brazilian had already produced the biggest win of his career in the previous round by coming back from two sets down to defeat Novak Djokovic. Those back-to-back victories have firmly established him as one of the leading contenders remaining in the draw.
The run is particularly impressive considering Fonseca arrived in Paris with little momentum after early exits in both Madrid and Rome. Questions surrounded his form heading into the tournament, but he has answered them emphatically.
Earlier this season, the 19-year-old missed several events and struggled with back issues, leading to a number of early defeats. Since Indian Wells, however, he has steadily rebuilt his level, reaching the fourth round there and making quarterfinal runs in Monte Carlo and Munich.
This is the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of Fonseca's career. He had never progressed beyond the third round at a major before this tournament. He heads into the last eight with a 2-4 record in tour-level quarterfinals.

Verdict
Mensik, meanwhile, appears to have already emptied a huge amount of physical energy through several gruelling battles earlier in the tournament, and it is difficult to see him being fully ready to offer a sustained competitive challenge here.
This looks very much like Fonseca’s match to control from start to finish. Backing Fonseca outright, Fonseca -4.5 games handicap, Fonseca -1.5 sets handicap, and even a small punt on Fonseca to win in straight sets all stand out strongly for this matchup.
