In what promises to be one of the matches of the day, Novak Djokovic will certainly have to be wary of the dangerous threat posed by Joao Fonseca. The Brazilian possesses explosive shot-making ability and enough talent to trouble anyone on tour.

However, Fonseca is also coming off a demanding five-set battle and is not yet physically at an elite level, which slightly eases the challenge for Djokovic. With the vast experience Djokovic possesses in managing long Grand Slam matches, he should be capable of gradually exploiting that physical edge and breaking Fonseca down as the match progresses.

Djokovic Targets Quarterfinal Return

  • Joao Fonseca holds a 0–2 record in third-round Grand Slam matches.
  • He owns a 1–6 career record against Top 10 players.
  • Novak Djokovic has not lost a third-round match at the French Open since 2009.
  • He holds a 7–1 record against players outside the Top 20 in 2026.

Fonseca Storms Back From Two Sets Down

Joao Fonseca showed tremendous resilience in the second round, coming from two sets down to defeat Dino Prizmic 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. After dropping the opening two sets, Fonseca converted all six of his break-point chances across the final three sets to complete the comeback.

After a slow start to the season, the Brazilian found his rhythm with a fourth-round run in Indian Wells and quarterfinal appearances in Monte Carlo and Munich. However, that momentum was interrupted by back-to-back opening-match defeats in Madrid and Rome.

Fonseca now has another opportunity to break new ground at the majors. He has played two previous third-round matches in Grand Slams and lost both, falling to Jack Draper at Roland Garros and Nicolas Jarry at Wimbledon, both in 2025.

Djokovic Sees Opportunity Open in Paris

Novak Djokovic moved into the third round after defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Valentin Royer in back-to-back four-set matches. He was broken twice in each contest but handled both challenges well enough to progress.

The Serbian has been dealing with multiple injury setbacks since last year and has played a limited schedule this season. He entered Paris having played only three tournaments, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Australian Open and a fourth-round appearance in Rome.

With the injury withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz and the early exit of Jannik Sinner, the draw has opened up considerably. Djokovic now has a major opportunity to chase a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, although questions remain about his fitness and ability to handle long physical matches over two weeks.

Djokovic has played 20 third-round matches at Roland Garros and lost only once. That lone defeat came back in 2009, underlining his remarkable consistency in the early stages of this tournament.

Verdict

The opening stages could remain highly competitive before Djokovic starts taking control deeper into the contest. Backing over 9.5 or 10.5 games in the first set, Djokovic to win, Djokovic to cover the -3.5 games handicap and the -1.5 sets handicap all look like appealing options.
