Flavio Cobolli has lost only two sets throughout the tournament and remains as fresh as anyone could hope to be at this stage of a Grand Slam. In contrast, Matteo Arnaldi has had to endure a far more demanding route, spending nearly 11 hours on court across his third-round and round-of-16 matches alone.

That gives Cobolli a massive physical advantage heading into this contest. Add in the greater experience he has accumulated in high-pressure matches, and the matchup appears to tilt strongly in his favor.

Arnaldi Seeks Semifinal Breakthrough

  • Matteo Arnaldi holds a 0–3 record in tour-level semifinals.
  • He has lost eight of his last nine matches against Top 20 players.
  • Flavio Cobolli owns a 5–2 record in tour-level semifinals.
  • He has won 16 of his last 20 matches against players outside the Top 20.

Arnaldi Reaches Maiden Grand Slam Semifinal

Matteo Arnaldi secured his place in the semifinals at the French Open after compatriot Matteo Berrettini retired while trailing by a set and 2-5. It is the first Grand Slam semifinal of Arnaldi's career.

The retirement came at a fortunate time for the Italian, who had endured back-to-back five-set battles against Raphael Collignon and Frances Tiafoe in the previous rounds. The shortened match gives him valuable recovery time ahead of the biggest match of his career.

With this run, Arnaldi becomes the lowest-ranked player to reach the Roland Garros semifinals since Filip Dewulf in 1997. Excluding the retirement victory, he dropped at least one set in each of his previous four matches.

The Italian struggled with foot and ankle injuries earlier this season, which severely disrupted his campaign and left him without a main-draw win until April. Since then, however, he has rediscovered his form, winning 12 of his last 13 matches, including the title in Cagliari Challenger and a third-round run in Rome.

Arnaldi heads into the semifinals with a 0-3 record in tour-level semifinals and is now bidding to reach his first tour-level final.

Cobolli Downs World No. 6

Flavio Cobolli defeated world No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the semifinals at the French Open. He saved eight of the 11 break points he faced and converted five of the 11 opportunities he created.

Cobolli has enjoyed a favorable draw throughout the tournament. Many of his opponents either lacked experience at this stage of a Grand Slam or had limited success on clay, and the Italian has taken full advantage of the opportunity.

With several leading contenders already out of the draw, Cobolli has emerged as one of the favorites for the title. He also finds himself in what appears to be the more open half of the draw, giving him a realistic chance of reaching his first Grand Slam final.

The Italian has been somewhat inconsistent this season, with eight of his 12 tournaments ending before the latter stages. However, his deep runs have been impressive, including the title in Acapulco, a runner-up finish in Munich, a semifinal in Delray Beach and a quarterfinal in Madrid. Combined with his run in Paris, those results have lifted him to No. 10 in the live rankings.

Like his compatriot Matteo Arnaldi, this is the first Grand Slam semifinal of Cobolli's career. He heads into the final four with a strong 5-2 record in tour-level semifinals.

Verdict

Considering the physical freshness and big-stage experience advantage that Cobolli holds heading into this matchup, backing him to cover the -4.5 games handicap, and the -1.5 sets handicap makes plenty of appeal.
