Rafael Jodar is still extremely young and inexperienced for this stage of a Grand Slam, and this matchup could test him both mentally and physically. This is his first appearance in the quarterfinal stage of a major, and he arrives here after surviving back-to-back five-set battles, which likely leaves very little left in reserve physically for another high-pressure contest.

Zverev Eyes Another Semifinal

  • Jodar is looking to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
  • He owns a 1–2 career record against Top 10 players.
  • Alexander Zverev holds a 4–3 record in Roland Garros quarterfinals.
  • He has a 29–2 record against players outside the Top 20 in 2026.

Jodar Produces Another Stunning Comeback

Rafael Jodar secured his place in the quarterfinals at the French Open after coming back from two sets down to defeat Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. He was broken twice in the opening two sets but did not face a single break point in the final three sets, showing his growing confidence as the match went on.

This was Jodar's second consecutive five-set victory after his comeback win over Alex Michelsen in the previous round. Earlier in the tournament, he also defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic and James Duckworth.

The 19-year-old has been on a remarkable rise since last season. He reached at least the semifinals eight times on the Challenger Tour in 2025, a run that helped him break into the Top 200 by the end of the year.

He carried that momentum into 2026 and gradually adapted to tour-level competition. Since the start of the clay season, however, he has taken another step forward, reaching the quarterfinals in all five clay events he has played while winning 19 of his 22 matches on the surface.

Those results have moved him close to a Top 20 debut in the rankings. He heads into this quarterfinal with a 2-2 record in tour-level quarterfinal matches.

Zverev Powers Into Last Eight

Alexander Zverev defeated Jesper de Jong in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals at the French Open. He trailed 0-3 in the opening set but recovered quickly and gradually took full control of the match.

This is Zverev's eighth French Open quarterfinal and his sixth consecutive one in Paris. He has won four of his previous seven quarterfinals here, most recently losing to Novak Djokovic last year despite taking the opening set.

With several top contenders already out of the tournament, Zverev has a major opportunity to challenge for his maiden Grand Slam title. The pressure will be on the German, but his experience in the latter stages of majors could prove crucial over the coming days.

Apart from early exits in Acapulco and Rome, Zverev has reached at least the semifinals in every other tournament he has played since Vienna last season. That level of consistency has kept him among the leading contenders throughout the year.

He owns a 10-6 record in Grand Slam quarterfinals and most recently won at this stage against Learner Tien at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Verdict

Alexander Zverev may not always be the most reliable player in pressure situations, but he should still possess enough experience, physical strength, and overall quality to control this matchup comfortably. Expecting Zverev to win in either three or four sets, while the -1.5 sets handicap and -4.5 games handicap also make strong appeal here.
