Shintaro Mochizuki is a former Wimbledon boys' champion, and many of his best performances have come on grass. The Japanese player is naturally comfortable on the surface, and his game is well suited to the quicker conditions, making him a dangerous opponent despite his lower ranking.

Rafael Jodar has enjoyed a much stronger season overall and sits considerably higher in the rankings, but he remains largely inexperienced on grass, having played only a handful of professional matches on the surface. That lack of experience significantly narrows the gap between the two players and gives Mochizuki a genuine opportunity to stay competitive.

A Breakthrough Battle On Grass

  • Rafael Jodar holds a 1–0 record in third-round Grand Slam matches.
  • He owns an 18–1 record against players outside the Top 100.
  • Shintaro Mochizuki has lost 13 of his last 14 matches against Top 50 players.
  • This is his best Grand Slam result.

Jodar Delivers Another Comeback

Rafael Jodar reached the third round after backing up his opening-round victory over Felix Gill 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 with a remarkable 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback win against Pablo Carreno Busta. The Spaniard recovered from two sets to one down to continue his dream Wimbledon debut.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a breakthrough Grand Slam season, reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros on his main-draw debut before backing it up with another impressive run at Wimbledon. He has won five consecutive Grand Slam main-draw matches since the French Open.

Jodar has adapted quickly to the professional tour after turning pro late last year, with his recent results helping him establish himself on the ATP Tour.

He is appearing in the third round of a Grand Slam for the second consecutive tournament and will now look to reach the second week of a major for the first time.

Mochizuki Extends Impressive Run

Shintaro Mochizuki reached the third round at Wimbledon after defeating his second-round opponent in straight sets, following another comfortable win in the opening round. The Japanese qualifier has now won seven of his last eight matches after reaching the quarterfinals at the Nottingham Challenger.

The Japanese will be relieved with this run after a disappointing first five months of the season. Before the grass swing, he had won only two main-draw matches all year, highlighting his struggles for form.

Mochizuki has registered multiple main-draw wins at a tour-level event only twice in his career, reaching the semifinals in Tokyo in 2023 and the quarterfinals in Almaty in 2025. He will now look to achieve his best Grand Slam result.

Verdict

While Jodar may still have the edge based on his overall level this season, Mochizuki's superior grass-court pedigree makes the handicap markets particularly appealing. Backing Mochizuki to cover the +5.5 games handicap, Mochizuki to cover the +2.5 sets handicap, and Mochizuki to win over 17.5 games in the match are the selections that offer the best value.
