Taylor Fritz got off to a solid start in the US Open series, winning the title in Washington, before fatigue and a minor injury led to an early exit in Montreal. With a good period of rest since then, he should now be back in strong physical condition, full of energy and fresh for Cincinnati, where the conditions also suit his aggressive, first-strike game. As a result, he can be expected to return to winning ways in this matchup, with his overall level likely to be high.

However, Mitchelsen is also arriving in excellent form, which means this will not be an easy assignment for Fritz despite the favourable setup.

Fritz Seeks To Improve His Cincinnati Record

  • Fritz has a 3–4 record in opening-round matches at Cincinnati.
  • He has an 8–6 record against fellow Americans in 2026.
  • Michelsen has won six of his last seven second-round matches at Masters events.
  • He has a 3–9 career record against Top 10 players.

Taylor Fritz Seeks a Cincinnati Response

After a long week in Washington, where he won the title, Taylor Fritz faced an opening-round exit in Montreal last week. It was his first opening-round loss on hard courts since the Paris Masters in 2024.

Before that, he had strong momentum on his side after reaching the finals in Stuttgart and Halle, the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and winning the title in Washington. He will now be looking to rebuild that momentum this week.

He also faced injury issues earlier this year, which limited his schedule during the clay swing before his recent resurgence. He also reached the final in Dallas and the fourth round at the Australian Open and Miami.

This is his eighth main-draw appearance in Cincinnati, and he cleared the first-round hurdle in three of his previous seven appearances.

Michelsen Looks to Keep Rising

Alex Michelsen moved into the second round after defeating Jesper de Jong in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. He fired seven aces and saved both break points he faced during the match.

The American posted solid results early this year by reaching the fourth round in Miami and Indian Wells and the semifinal in Brisbane, but he struggled to replicate those results in the following months.

However, he has rebuilt his momentum in recent weeks by producing a couple of deep runs on the Challenger circuit, along with reaching the quarterfinals in Washington and the third round in Montreal. He will now be looking to continue that momentum this week.

Verdict

Fritz is backed to get the win given his quality and suitability to the conditions, but Mitchelsen’s current form suggests this should be a competitive contest.

A tight match looks likely, with the potential for at least one tiebreak and extended sets. The over 21.5 games line stands out, along with over 2.5 sets as a strong supporting angle.
