Taylor Fritz has been in fantastic form throughout the US Open Series, barring his one setback against Thiago Agustin Tirante in Montreal, which came while he was dealing with an injury. Now fully recovered and fresh, Fritz is back at his best and should be able to impose himself against Christopher O'Connell.

Fritz Targets A Third Cincinnati Quarterfinal

  • Taylor Fritz has a 2–1 record in R16 matches at Cincinnati.
  • He has a 23–2 record against players outside the Top 100 since the start of 2024.
  • Christopher O'Connell has a 0–1 record in R16 matches at Masters events.
  • He has a 0–12 career record against Top 10 players.

Taylor Fritz Keeps His Cincinnati Run on Track

Taylor Fritz ended Daniel Merida Aguilar's dream run to reach the fourth round in Cincinnati, winning 6-3, 6-4. He fired eight aces and saved both break points he faced during the match.

This is his fourth Round of 16 appearance in Cincinnati, and he has converted two of his previous three into quarterfinal runs, reaching the last eight in 2022 and 2023 before losing at this stage last year.

The American dealt with fitness issues and was sidelined for a couple of months after facing early exits during the clay swing. Despite that, he has enjoyed a strong season overall, including reaching four finals, and will now be looking to extend his success this week.

O'Connell's Fortunate Draw Leads to a Big Opportunity

Christopher O'Connell has benefited from a favorable draw this week, receiving a retirement win against Casper Ruud a few days ago before getting a walkover against Joao Fonseca to reach the fourth round in Cincinnati.

Before this week, he had struggled significantly, failing to win a main-draw match in 17 of his first 19 events. His only notable results came with a quarterfinal run in Rotterdam and a Challenger title in Nottingham.

He has reached the Round of 16 at a Masters event for only the second time in his career. He previously reached this stage in Miami in 2024 but lost to Jannik Sinner, and he now faces another Top player in Cincinnati.

Verdict

With the American back to full fitness and playing with confidence, he should have too much quality for O'Connell and could control the match from the outset. Backing Taylor Fritz to win in straight sets and a tiebreaker to be played in the match.
