The Frenchman fought back from a set down to upset home favorite Frances Tiafoe in a three-set battle, a result that should give him plenty of confidence and momentum.
Against an out-of-form Alejandro Tabilo, Atmane looks well placed to build on that victory and continue his strong run in these conditions.

Terence Atmane advanced to the second round after defeating Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Frenchman fired 10 aces and converted three of the six break points he created during the match.
The victory came at the perfect time, as Atmane arrived in Washington having lost eight of his previous nine matches, including six consecutive opening-round defeats on the ATP Tour.
The 23-year-old has played 20 tournaments this season and has registered multiple main-draw wins at only three of them, reaching the quarterfinals in Acapulco, the fourth round in Miami, and the third round in Madrid.
Atmane will also be looking to build confidence ahead of the North American hard-court swing, where he has semifinal points to defend in Cincinnati next month.

Tabilo Builds Confidence After Tough Spell
Alejandro Tabilo bounced back from a disappointing opening-round defeat to Tiago Torres in Estoril by upsetting Tallon Griekspoor 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the second round in Washington.
The Chilean has suffered four opening-round exits in his last five tournaments. Despite those recent struggles, he has produced several impressive results this season, reaching the final in Rio de Janeiro, the semifinals in Bastad, the fourth round at the French Open, and three additional semifinal-or-better finishes on the Challenger Tour.
Tabilo has previously reached the round of 16 at three North American hard-court tournaments, but each of those runs ended at that stage. He will now be aiming to reach his first ATP Tour quarterfinal in the region.
