Vilius Gaubas has played a lot of matches on clay and has enough experience on the surface to stay competitive and keep the scorelines close. However, he is still relatively inexperienced at the highest level compared to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Aliassime Eyes Safe Progression

  • Vilius Gaubas is 0–1 against Top 10 players in his career.
  • He has a 7–1 record in Masters events, including qualifying.
  • Felix Auger-Aliassime has not lost to outside Top 100 players since Wimbledon last year.
  • He has a 2–3 record in third-round matches in Madrid.

Gaubas Ends Losing Streak Here

Vilius Gaubas cleared the opening round in Madrid with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Sebastian Baez. He saved both break points he faced and converted three of his seven chances.

Before arriving this week, he was on a four-match losing streak across all levels. In 10 tournaments this year, he managed multiple wins only twice, with a semifinal in the Oeiras Challenger and a quarterfinal in Santiago.

This is just his second Masters-level appearance. He previously played in Rome last year and reached the third round before losing to Alexander Zverev in straight sets.

Auger Aliassime Starts Clay Strongly

Felix Auger-Aliassime has carried his strong form from last season into 2026, winning the title in Montpellier and reaching the final in Rotterdam and the semifinal in Dubai. Those results helped him rise to a career-high ranking of No. 5.

He started his clay season with a quarterfinal run in Monte Carlo, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets. It was a much better start compared to last year.

In 2025, he played six clay events and suffered five opening-round exits, with only a semifinal in Hamburg standing out. That makes this season’s early clay form especially encouraging.

He has played Madrid six times before, with four of those runs ending in or before the second round. His best results were a quarterfinal in 2022 and a final in 2024.

Verdict

Auger-Aliassime’s higher level, stronger all-round game, and greater experience at the top level should allow him to stay in control throughout the match. Backing Auger-Aliassime to win in straight sets and cover the -3.5 games handicap looks like a strong option.
