Munar Returns With Confident Win

Jaume Munar moved into the second round with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Alexander Shevchenko. He saved both break points he faced and converted three of his five chances.

The 28-year-old had a steady start to the season with quarterfinal runs in Adelaide and Rotterdam, but an arm injury in Rotterdam stopped his progress and kept him out for two months. He returned a few weeks ago in Barcelona, losing to Rafael Jodar in the opening round.

Before this week, Munar had played 12 clay Masters events and managed multiple main-draw wins only twice, reaching the fourth round in Madrid in 2023 and Rome last year.

Ruud Looks To Regain Momentum

Casper Ruud is coming off a third-round exit in Monte Carlo, where he retired against Félix Auger-Aliassime after losing the opening set due to injury concerns.

The Norwegian has had a mixed season so far, with early exits in four of his seven tournaments. His better results include fourth-round runs at the Australian Open and Indian Wells.

Ruud now returns to Madrid as the defending champion. He has made five main-draw appearances here, reaching the semifinals in 2021 and lifting the title in 2025.

Verdict

Even if Ruud starts slowly due to rust, his resilience and determination in big moments should help him find a way through. Backing Ruud to win and Ruud to win in three sets.
