The Tigers lost the last two games of the regular season, but a good run throughout September meant those defeats were not costly.
They won 15 of their last 20 matchups – a sequence that included a season-best six-game win streak last week.
Detroit bounced back from a loss in Baltimore with 6-4 and 4-3 wins over the Orioles, before returning home to sweep Tampa Bay with 2-1, 7-1 and 4-3 victories.
The Tigers then won the series opener with the Chicago White Sox, 4-1, before losing the final two games of the regular season, 4-0 and 9-5.
Houston Astros Form
Houston came into this playoff series having compiled an 88-73 regular season record to finish top of the American League West.
The Astros made a bad start to the campaign as they lost 19 of their first 26 games, but they were able to turn things around and finish three games ahead of Seattle.
They ended the regular season with 11 wins in their final 16 games, although they did go 3-3 over their final six outings.
Houston swept the Los Angeles Angels at home, winning 3-1, 9-7 and 10-4, but they lost the series finale and then suffered defeats in two of their three games against Seattle.
The Astros ended the regular season with a couple of wins though, travelling to Cleveland to down the Guardians 5-2 and 4-3.
Verdict
Not only have runs been at a premium in recent meetings between the two teams, they have also been limited in recent matchups involving either team.
We expect those trends to continue as Houston avoid an early elimination from the postseason.
