New Jersey booked their trip to the postseason by compiling a 42-33-7 record to claim third place in the Metropolitan Division.
The Devils go into the playoffs in poor form though, having lost four of their previous five games.
They ended March with back-to-back wins and began April with a 4-0 shutout of the New York Rangers, only to cool off after that.
New Jersey suffered three consecutive defeats at home, as they lost 7-2 to Boston, 4-2 to Pittsburgh and 1-0 to the New York Islanders.
The Devils avoided a fourth straight loss by beating Boston 5-4 in overtime on the road, but failed to back that up as they ended the regular season with a 5-2 loss to Detroit.
Carolina Hurricanes Form
Carolina secured their place in the playoffs by putting together a 47-30-5 regular-season record that placed them second in the Metropolitan Division.
The Hurricanes also ended the regular season in bad form though, as they lost seven of their final eight games.
They began April with a 5-1 win over Washington, but their form then nose-dived on the road as they lost 5-3 in Detroit, 5-1 at Boston, 3-0 in Buffalo and 5-4 at Washington.
Carolina avoided a fifth straight defeat as they beat the New York Rangers 7-3, but they failed to back that up.
The Hurricanes closed out the regular season by losing 4-1 to Toronto, 4-2 in Montreal and 7-5 at Ottawa.
Verdict
Both teams are in bad form, but Carolina offer more reason for optimism in this series-opener.
