The United States head to the World Championship looking to win back-to-back championships, and with the aim of completing a Winter Olympics/Worlds double.
The USA went all the way in this tournament a year ago, edging Switzerland 1-0 in overtime in the final, and then followed that up with a gold-medal showing at the Winter Olympics earlier this year.
They eased through the group stage at the winter games, beating Latvia 5-1, Denmark 6-3 and Germany 5-1 during the group stage.
The United States then booked their place in the gold medal game by beating Sweden 2-1 in overtime and Slovakia 6-2 in regulation.
The Americans then claimed the gold in dramatic fashion, beating arch rivals Canada 2-1 in overtime in the final.
Switzerland Form
Host nation Switzerland will aim to finally get their hands on the gold this year, having come up painfully short in each of the past two World Championships.
The Swiss have lost in the final in each of the previous two years, but they enter the tournament on the back of a disappointing showing at the Winter Olympics.
They advanced from the group stage by sandwiching a 5-1 defeat to Canada with wins over France, 4-0, and the Czech Republic, 4-3 in overtime.
Switzerland had to negotiate the qualification playoff though, and they did just that as they beat Italy 3-0.
However, the Swiss’ stay in the knockout stage was brief as they lost 3-2 in overtime to Finland in the quarter-finals.
Verdict
The United States have won the last two major tournaments, but this is the weakest roster they have fielded in the last 12 months.
