Daniil Medvedev is a former Rome Masters champion and brings vastly greater experience at Masters level and in the latter stages of big tournaments compared to Martin Landaluce, who is only playing the second tour-level quarterfinal of his career.

Landaluce Defies Expectations Again
Martin Landaluce defeated Hamad Medjedovic 7-5, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals in Rome. He saved six of the nine break points he faced and broke his opponent five times during the match.
Landaluce enjoyed a breakthrough run earlier this year in Miami, where he became the lowest-ranked player in 30 years to reach the quarterfinals at the tournament. Although he lost to Jiri Lehecka in straight sets, the result helped him break into the top 100 rankings for the first time.
A few months later, the Spaniard has now produced another impressive Masters run in Rome. Even more remarkably, he had never won a tour-level match on clay before this week, arriving with an 0-8 record on the surface. He also became the first lucky loser to reach the Rome quarterfinals since Lucas Pouille in 2016.
With this latest run, Landaluce is now projected to move close to the top 60 in the rankings. The rise has been especially impressive considering he had won only two tour-level matches before the start of 2025.

Medvedev Continues Strong 2026 Revival
Daniil Medvedev secured a straight-set victory over Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals in Rome. He needed only two wins to get this far after receiving a first-round bye and a walkover from Tomas Machac earlier in the week.
This is only Medvedev’s second quarterfinal appearance in Rome. His previous run came in 2023 when he went on to win the title after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune in the final two rounds. That remains the only clay-court title of his career.
The Russian endured a nightmare start to the clay season after suffering the worst defeat of his career against Matteo Berrettini in Monte Carlo, where he was double-bageled in the opening round. However, he responded positively by reaching the fourth round in Madrid the following week.
Overall, Medvedev has enjoyed a much stronger season compared to last year. Before Rome, he had already reached three quarterfinals and converted all of them into finals, winning titles in Brisbane and Dubai while finishing runner-up in Indian Wells.
The 30-year-old owns a 17-9 record in Masters quarterfinals but has lost four of his last six at this stage. He will now look to regain his momentum and make another deep run in Rome.
