Sinner Moves Closer To Golden Masters Glory

Jannik Sinner ended compatriot Andrea Pellegrino’s dream run in Rome with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory to reach the quarterfinals. It was his third straight-set win of the week, and he has not dropped more than seven games in any match so far.

With this run, Sinner extended his Masters winning streak to 31 matches, equaling Novak Djokovic for the longest streak in history. He also has a major opportunity this week to complete the Career Golden Masters with the support of the home crowd behind him.

Following injuries to Carlos Alcaraz and Djokovic’s recurring fitness struggles, Sinner has completely dominated the clay swing this season. At the moment, he looks nearly unbeatable on the surface.

Before 2026, Sinner had never won more than six consecutive clay-court matches and owned only one title on the surface, the ATP 250 event in Umag back in 2022. This season, however, he remains unbeaten on clay at 14-0 with back-to-back Masters titles in Monte Carlo and Madrid.

The world No. 1 also owns a superb 17-4 record in Masters quarterfinals and is currently on a nine-match winning streak at this stage. His most recent quarterfinal defeat came against Andrey Rublev in Montreal in 2024.

Rublev Chasing First Masters Semifinal Since 2024

Andrey Rublev survived a tough three-set battle against Nikoloz Basilashvili to reach the quarterfinals in Rome. He trailed by a set and a break before fighting back strongly to turn the match around.

This is only Rublev’s second quarterfinal appearance in Rome across eight appearances at the tournament. His previous run came in 2021, where he lost to Lorenzo Sonego in three sets.

The result comes as a major boost for the Russian, who arrived in Rome short on confidence after winning only one match across his previous four Masters appearances.

Rublev endured a disappointing 2025 season, during which he lost his top-10 ranking because of inconsistent performances and a lack of deep runs in major events apart from a couple of Masters quarterfinals.

He now heads into the quarterfinals with a 9-6 record at this stage in Masters events. Rublev is currently on a three-match losing streak in Masters quarterfinals, with his most recent victory coming against Jannik Sinner in Montreal 2024.

Verdict

Sinner has conceded just 14 games across his three matches in Rome so far, and the expectation is for that dominance to continue against Andrey Rublev. With a maiden home Masters title within reach, Sinner looks well positioned to bulldoze his way through this quarterfinal clash once again.
