Marin Cilic is a former Wimbledon finalist and one of the most accomplished grass-court players of his generation, with well over 100 tour-level matches on the surface. That wealth of experience makes him a particularly awkward first-round opponent, even for a top-10 player like Daniil Medvedev.

However, Cilic is no longer at his physical peak, and questions remain over whether he can maintain his level across a best-of-five-set contest. That should ultimately play into Medvedev's hands, although the Russian is unlikely to have things all his own way against such an experienced grass-court opponent.

A Tough Start For Two Big Names

  • Cilic holds a 12–3 record in Wimbledon first-round matches.
  • He is currently on a six-match losing streak against Top 10 players.
  • Medvedev owns a 6–1 record in Wimbledon opening-round matches.
  • He has a 15–4 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.

Cilic Looks to Rediscover Wimbledon Form

Marin Cilic kickstarted his grass-court season with a quarterfinal run in 's-Hertogenbosch, where he came through two comeback three-set victories before losing to Daniil Medvedev in another three-set battle. However, he failed to build on that result, suffering a first-round exit at Queen's Club the following week.

It was still an encouraging result after struggling for wins during the clay swing. Overall, Cilic has played 13 tournaments this season and has suffered first-round exits in five of them. His standout results include the semifinals in Dallas and third-round appearances at the Australian Open and Miami.

This will be Cilic's 16th main-draw appearance at Wimbledon. He has suffered first-round exits only three times in his previous 15 appearances, with his best result being a runner-up finish in 2017.

Daniil Medvedev Builds Grass Momentum

Daniil Medvedev suffered a second consecutive first-round exit at Roland Garros after losing to Adam Walton in five sets. However, he bounced back well during the grass swing by reaching the semifinals in 's-Hertogenbosch and the quarterfinals in Halle.

After struggling for much of last season, Medvedev has produced solid results this year. He has won titles in Brisbane and Dubai, finished runner-up at Indian Wells, reached the semifinals in Rome, and made the fourth round at both the Australian Open and Madrid. Those results have lifted him back into the top 10.

This will be Medvedev's eighth main-draw appearance at Wimbledon. Apart from his first-round loss last year, he cleared the opening round in each of his previous seven appearances, notably reaching back-to-back semifinals in 2023 and 2024.
