Brandon Nakashima has been one of the standout performers of this year's US Open Series, reaching the semi-finals in Washington and the final in Montreal. He certainly carries a genuine threat, but if anyone can nullify his momentum, it is Taylor Fritz.

With his wealth of experience and proven success in this region, Fritz has the quality and composure to put an end to Nakashima's impressive run.

Fritz Looks To Strengthen His Cincinnati Campaign

  • Taylor Fritz has won five of his last seven quarterfinals at Masters events.
  • He has won 15 of his last 17 matches against players outside the Top 20.

Taylor Fritz Chases His First Cincinnati Semifinal

Taylor Fritz reached the quarterfinals after defeating Christopher O'Connell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. He fired 10 aces and saved the only break point he faced during the match.

This is his third quarterfinal appearance in Cincinnati. He lost at this stage to Daniil Medvedev in 2022 and Novak Djokovic in 2023, and he will now be looking for a better result this week.

The American was sidelined for a few months during the clay season due to injury, but apart from a disappointing clay swing, he has posted impressive results. He has reached six quarterfinals this year and won four of them, converting all four into finals.

He has previously played 14 Masters quarterfinals and won seven of them, including his last three.

Nakashima's Breakthrough Summer Reaches Another Level

Brandon Nakashima registered a three-set win over Nuno Borges to reach the quarterfinals in Cincinnati, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. He fired 27 aces and saved all four break points he faced during the match.

With this run, he has become the first player ranked outside the Top 20 to reach the quarterfinals in Washington, the Canadian Open and Cincinnati in the same season since Andy Murray in 2006.

Until a few weeks ago, he was on a five-match losing streak in Round of 16 matches at Masters level, but he ended that run by reaching his first Masters quarterfinal in Montreal, where he went on to reach the final. He has now added another quarterfinal run in Cincinnati.

He has also played four other quarterfinals on tour this year and won all of them. Those results, combined with his run in Cincinnati, have confirmed that he will make his Top 20 debut in the rankings next week.

Verdict

Nakashima's recent form deserves plenty of respect, but Fritz's experience and proven record on North American hard courts give him the edge. The match could still be closely contested, with a tiebreak a strong possibility, but Fritz should have enough quality to come through in straight sets.

Backing Taylor Fritz to win in straight sets and a tiebreaker to be played in the match.
