The Czech Republic enter the Winter Olympics having cooled off a little since their red-hot start to the 2025 World Championship.
The Czechs opened that campaign with six straight wins to ease through the group stage despite a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the United States.
They were one-and-done in the knockout stage though, losing 5-2 to Sweden in the quarter-finals.
The Czech Republic then lost 3-1 to the Swedes and 4-2 to Finland in the Karjala leg of the Euro Hockey Tour, which they concluded in positive fashion with a 4-0 blowout of Switzerland.
The Czechs built on that in the SWISS tournament, as they beat Finland 3-1 and Switzerland 5-3 before falling 5-0 to Sweden.
Canada Form
Canada go into this tournament looking to issue a championship-winning response to their shock loss at last year’s World Championship.
The Canadians went into that tournament as the favourites to go all the way, and it was no shock when they opened the campaign with five consecutive victories.
They beat Slovenia 4-0, Latvia 7-1, France 5-0, Austria 5-1 and Slovakia 7-0, before seeing their perfect run end with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Finland.
Canada rebounded immediately as they wrapped up the group stage with a 5-3 victory over Sweden, but their joy was short-lived.
The Canadians faced Denmark in the quarter-finals and suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to the Danes.
Verdict
Canada’s World Championship bid ended disastrously last year, but that has done little to dampen expectations heading into the Winter Olympics.
