Jessie Vargas returns to the professional boxing ring for the first time in over two years.
Vargas’ form nose-dived after he lost to Timothy Bradley in a fight for the WBO interim welterweight title in June 2015.
Including that defeat, he has now won three, lost three and drawn two of his last eight fights.
He rebounded from the loss to Bradley with a ninth-round knockout loss to Sadam Ali, but then lost a decision to Manny Pacquiao later that year.
Vargas won his sole outing of 2017 as he claimed a decision win over Aaron Herrera.
However, 2018 proved to be a disappointing year as he went to a majority draw with Adrien Broner and split decision draw with Thomas Dulorme.
He finally returned to winning ways with a sixth-round stoppage of Humberto Soto in April 2019.
Vargas lost his sole outing of 2020 though, losing by decision to Mikey Garcia, and he has not fought since then.
He has a 29-3-2 professional record with 11 wins by knockout. All three of his losses have been via decision.
Liam Smith Form
Liam Smith has won seven of his nine fights since losing the WBO light-middleweight title to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
He bounced back from that loss with a decision win over Marian Cazacu, and then beat Liam Williams when his opponent retired after the ninth round.
Smith then edged Williams by majority decision in the rematch before dropping a decision to Jaime Munguia.
‘Beefy’ rebounded from that setback with a fifth-round stoppage of domestic rival Sam Eggington in March 2019.
That summer he travelled to Mexico to knock out Mario Alberto Lozano, and he then closed out the year with a unanimous decision win over Roberto Garcia in the US.
Smith’s streak was once again halted at three fights, this time courtesy of a decision defeat to Magomed Kurbanov in May 2021.
He ended the year on a positive note, stopping another domestic rival, Anthony Fowler, in the eighth round.
Smith now boasts a 30-3-1 professional record with 17 knockout wins and one knockout defeat.
Verdict
Smith may be the ‘visiting’ fighter but he is rightly favoured by the bookmakers.
Vargas is not in good form and has not fought for over two years – Smith is tipped to take advantage of that.
