  • Buse reaches first ATP final after beating two Top 30 opponents.
  • Paul seeks a Top 20 comeback but may be fatigued from tough matches.
  • Recommendation: Expect a short, competitive final—under 23.5 games or 2.5 sets.

This is a matchup that could genuinely go either way, making it difficult to confidently pick an outright winner. Tommy Paul has not looked particularly convincing throughout the week and has spent a lot of time on court in several physically demanding battles.

On the other hand, Ignacio Buse is playing the first ATP final of his career, which naturally brings a different kind of pressure and nerves into the equation. Both players therefore carry certain vulnerabilities heading into this final.

Paul Faces Rising Buse

  • Ignacio Buse already defeated two Top 30 players this week.
  • This is the first tour-level final of his career.
  • Tommy Paul holds a 5–4 career record in tour-level finals.
  • He owns an 11–3 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.

Buse Produces Career Breakthrough

Ignacio Buse defeated lucky loser Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-1, 6-4 to reach the final in Hamburg. He did not face a single break point and won an outstanding 93 percent of his first-serve points during the match.

This is the maiden tour-level final of Buse’s young career. He previously reached the semifinals in Gstaad and Rio de Janeiro but lost both matches before reaching the title clash.

During this impressive run, the Peruvian defeated three highly ranked opponents in consecutive matches, Flavio Cobolli, Jakub Mensik and Ugo Humbert. Before this week, he had never beaten back-to-back top-50 players in his career.

The 22-year-old’s rise has been remarkable. He made his breakthrough on tour only during his semifinal run in Gstaad last July, and less than a year later he is now guaranteed to break into the top 40 rankings for the first time.

Paul Keeps Title Hopes Alive

Tommy Paul secured his place in the final in Hamburg after defeating Alex de Minaur 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. He trailed by a set and 0-3 before producing a remarkable comeback victory.

The American arrived in Hamburg following disappointing early exits in Madrid and Rome, where he failed to defend major ranking points from the previous season. Those results pushed him outside the top 20 rankings.

However, a title this week would be enough to regain his place inside the top 20. Earlier in the season, Paul also produced strong results with a final in Delray Beach, a title in Houston and a quarterfinal appearance in Miami.

Paul now owns a 5-4 career record in tour-level finals. On clay, he has played one previous final at this level and converted it into the title in Houston earlier this year.

Verdict

The better angle here may be targeting a shorter match rather than choosing a winner. Paul is likely carrying fatigue, while Buse has already come through qualifying and played plenty of tennis himself. With the French Open starting immediately after this event, neither player is likely to want an extended physical battle. Backing under 23.5 games and under 2.5 sets both look like sensible options here.
