Travis Kelce has been getting plenty of headlines this season, but the star of this team is quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Despite the offense having issues this season, Mahomes has continued to play at a high level to maintain his position as the league’s best QB.
He has produced many incredible performances throughout his career, with two of his very best coming under the bright lights of the Super Bowl.
Mahomes has led the Chiefs in comeback wins in two of his three appearances in the NFL’s big game, and each time he has earned MVP honours.
One of those was against the San Francisco 49ers back in February 2021 when Kansas City put up 21 points in the fourth quarter to win 31-20.
If the Chiefs get the better of the 49ers once again Mahomes will undoubtedly have played a key role, and if he does the trend for winning QBs being named MVP is likely to continue.

Brock Purdy is the leading candidate to be named MVP from the San Francisco ranks, but we are looking past ‘Mr Irrelevant’.
Instead we believe the best pick from the 49ers roster has to be running back Christian McCaffrey.
McCaffrey has established himself as the best running back in the National Football League and he is in tremendous form heading into this massive matchup.
He produced over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns during the regular season, and has been in dominant form in the postseason.
The San Francisco running back put up 128 total yards and two touchdowns in the Divisional Playoff win over Green Bay, and had 132 yards and two TDs in the NFC Championship Game win over Detroit.
This 49ers offense flows through him, and if they are to have any success they need McCaffrey to put up good numbers.
If he does it in similar fashion to the last two playoff games, he will almost certainly catch the eye of voters like Cooper Kupp did for the Los Angeles Rams two years ago.
Verdict
Quarterbacks tend to walk away with this award and Kansas City boast the best QB in the game in Mahomes, so a Chiefs win is likely to result in another MVP award for him.
But what if the 49ers win? If they do, one of the biggest contributors is likely to be McCaffrey, and if he shines on the big stage he could become the first running back to win MVP since the 1998 season.
