Blockx Continues Stunning Rise

Alexander Blockx produced back-to-back comeback victories to reach the third round on his Rome Masters debut. He defeated Federico Cina 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 before overcoming Tallon Griekspoor 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 in another three-set battle.

The Belgian has continued his rapid rise throughout 2026. He began the season outside the top 100 rankings and built momentum with three semifinal-or-better finishes on the Challenger circuit.

Blockx then carried that success onto the main tour, reaching the third round in Monte Carlo before making a major breakthrough with a semifinal run in Madrid. Those performances helped him climb to a career-high ranking of No. 36 last week.

Zverev Chasing Bigger Success Again

Alexander Zverev opened his Rome campaign with a 7-5, 6-3 win over compatriot Daniel Altmaier. He trailed by a break in the second set before recovering strongly to finish the match in straight sets.

Apart from a second-round loss in Acapulco earlier this year, Zverev has reached at least the semifinals in eight of his last nine tournaments. His consistency over the past few months has been among the best on tour.

The main disappointment, however, has been his inability to convert those deep runs into titles. He has repeatedly struggled against elite opponents in the latter stages of tournaments, something he recently admitted himself.

Zverev also enjoys an outstanding record in Rome. He has played seven third-round matches at the Italian Open and won all of them, including during his title-winning campaigns in 2017 and 2024.

Verdict

Zverev should be able to control the match once again and avoid getting dragged into a long battle. Backing Zverev to win in straight sets and cover the -3.5 games handicap both align with the expected pattern of this contest.
