Frances Tiafoe came from a set down to defeat Ignacio Buse 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 in Rome. He failed to save four of the five break points he faced but converted seven of his 13 chances in the match.
Tiafoe is now aiming to record consecutive wins in Rome for the first time in his career. Across his previous seven appearances, he managed only one third-round run, which ended in a three-set defeat to Lorenzo Musetti in 2023.
The American has still enjoyed a solid season overall. He reached at least the quarterfinals in six of his eight tournaments, including a final in Acapulco, a quarterfinal in Miami, and a semifinal run in Houston on clay.

Pellegrino Advances After Fils Retirement
Andrea Pellegrino continued his breakthrough run in Rome after advancing to the third round when Arthur Fils retired with a hip injury while trailing 0-4 in the opening set.
The Italian will be especially relieved with this result considering the fitness and form concerns he carried into the tournament. He had previously retired during qualifying in both Marrakech and Monte Carlo earlier this season.
Pellegrino enjoyed a similar breakthrough run in Santiago back in February, where he won four matches as a qualifier before losing to Luciano Darderi in the quarterfinals. That remains his only other multiple-win run at tour level.
