Alexander Bublik has not shown much resistance in recent weeks, losing each of his last three matches in straight sets. When things are not going his way, he can sometimes fade out of contests quickly, which is a dangerous sign heading into a matchup against a relentless clay-court grinder like Sebastian Baez.

Baez Looks To Regain Momentum

Sebastian Baez advanced to the second round in Rome after defeating Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 7-6. He was just one point away from being pushed into a deciding set but stayed composed in the closing stages to seal the win.

The Argentine started the season strongly, reaching the final in Auckland and the semifinals in Buenos Aires and Santiago. He also made the third round in Indian Wells, but his form has dipped since the start of the European clay swing.

Baez has won only two matches across his last four events on clay. He has played four second-round matches in Rome, with three of those runs ending at this stage, apart from his fourth-round appearance in 2024.

Bublik Searches For Winning Form

Alexander Bublik arrives in Rome on a three-match losing streak after back-to-back opening-round defeats in Munich and Madrid. He lost to Alex Molcan and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively.

The Kazakh enjoyed a strong stretch from the second half of last season into early 2026, producing seven semifinal-or-better runs on tour. Those results helped him break into the top 10 for the first time in his career.

However, his form has dipped since Rotterdam earlier this year. Bublik has managed only four wins across his last six tournaments, highlighting his recent inconsistency.

The 28-year-old has struggled historically at the Italian Open. In six previous appearances, he cleared the opening round only twice, with his best result being a third-round run in 2023.

Verdict

Baez may not always inspire confidence during the European clay swing, but this matchup suits him well if Bublik is not mentally ready for a physical battle. Baez as an underdog carries value here, with Baez to win and Baez to win in straight sets both appealing options.
