Giron Looks To Rebuild Momentum

Marcos Giron arrives in Rome after reaching the quarterfinals of the Cagliari Challenger last week. He defeated Aleksandar Vukic and Aleksandar Kovacevic before losing to Roman Andres Burruchaga, with all three matches going the distance.

The American began the season strongly with back-to-back semifinals in Hong Kong and Auckland. Since then, however, his form has dipped, managing only two wins across his next six tour-level events.

His only other notable result since January was a runner-up finish at the Phoenix Challenger in March. That disappointing stretch has pushed him outside the top 70 in the rankings.

This will be his fifth main draw appearance at the Italian Open. He has cleared the opening round in three of his previous four appearances, including third-round runs in 2022 and 2025.

Cilic Back Inside Top Fifty

Marin Cilic competed in Madrid last week, where he came from behind to defeat Zizou Bergs in three sets. However, he later gave a walkover to Joao Fonseca due to food poisoning.

The Croatian has enjoyed a solid season so far, reaching the third round at both the Australian Open and Miami, along with a semifinal run in Dallas. He also picked up main draw wins in Monte Carlo and Madrid, helping him return to the top 50.

This is his first appearance at the Italian Open since 2022 and his 15th overall. He holds a strong 10-4 record in opening-round matches here and notably reached the semifinal in 2018.

Verdict

Giron’s fresher legs and recent match rhythm could prove decisive in these slower conditions. Backing Giron to win, along with Giron to win in three sets, offers good value in this matchup.
