Ignacio Buse is enjoying a much stronger season compared to the injury-hit campaign of Lorenzo Sonego. However, Buse did not look at his sharpest level in Aix-en-Provence last week, and that could open the door for Sonego, who benefits from home support and plenty of experience in these conditions.

Italian Challenge Awaits Buse

  • Lorenzo Sonego won only two matches across eight clay events since 2025.
  • He holds a 15–6 record vs outside Top 50 players in the last 12 months.
  • Ignacio Buse is 5–6 in tour-level opening rounds.
  • He has a 16–4 career record vs Italian opponents.

Sonego Seeks Strong Rome Revival

Lorenzo Sonego suffered a wrist injury during the Australian swing, which forced him out of action for nearly two months. Since returning, he has played three events and recorded just one win, which came in Barcelona.

Last season, the Italian struggled on clay, winning only one main draw match across five tournaments on the surface. He now hopes for a stronger clay campaign this year.

Sonego has made nine main draw appearances at the Italian Open, with five ending in opening-round exits. His best result came in 2021 when he reached the semifinals.

Buse Continues Rapid Rise

Ignacio Buse has shown steady progress since the second half of last year. He reached his maiden tour-level semifinal in Gstaad and added another semifinal run in Rio de Janeiro earlier this season, helping him climb to a career-high ranking of No. 58.

The 22-year-old also impressed in Madrid a few weeks ago, defeating Adrian Mannarino before losing to Arthur Fils in a close three-set match. He followed that with a quarterfinal run at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger.

Buse has played 11 tour-level events in his career and cleared the opening round in five of them. Notably, four of those wins have come this year, highlighting his growing confidence and ability on tour.

Verdict

Sonego’s experience and familiarity with the venue give him a real chance to capitalize on any slight dip from Buse. At underdog odds, Sonego to pull off the upset and do it in straight sets both stand out as appealing plays.
