Tsitsipas Gains Confidence On Clay

Stefanos Tsitsipas is coming off a strong week in Madrid, where he reached the fourth round after winning three matches. His run ended with a narrow loss to Casper Ruud in a marathon three-set battle, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.

It was the first time since Dubai 2025 that Tsitsipas won more than two matches at a tour-level event. The result was an important boost after a difficult period that saw his ranking drop close to the top 100.

The Greek has been a consistent performer at the Italian Open since 2018. He has reached at least the quarterfinals in five of his eight appearances, with his best result being a runner-up finish in 2022.

Machac Shows Signs Of Revival

Tomas Machac has shown signs of improvement on clay in recent weeks, reaching the third round in Monte Carlo and the quarterfinal in Barcelona. Before Monte Carlo, he had never won multiple matches at a clay Masters event.

The Czech started the season strongly by winning the Adelaide title and reaching the third round at the Australian Open. However, an injury suffered in Montpellier disrupted his momentum and he has struggled for consistency since then.

Last year, he made his main draw debut at the Italian Open and reached the third round with the help of a first-round bye. He now returns looking to defend those ranking points after some encouraging clay results.

Verdict

Against a talented and dangerous player like Tomas Machac, this matchup looks far more even than the odds suggest. Machac as an underdog carries clear value in what shapes up as a genuine 50-50 contest.
