The Crimson Tide opened the season with a 55-0 shutout of Utah State, but dropped from the #1 spot a week later due to a narrow 20-19 win at Texas.
They dominated their opponents over the next couple of weeks, smashing Louisiana-Monroe 63-7 and Vanderbilt 55-3.
Alabama then backed that with a 24-20 win against Texas A&M, but when the schedule toughened their form took a costly dip.
They lost 52-49 to #6 Tennessee on the road, and although they beat #24 Mississippi State 30-6 a week later their joy was shortlived.
The Crimson Tide were beaten 32-31 at #15 LSU, effectively ending their chances of making the College Football Playoffs.
Alabama did finish the regular season strong though, beating #11 Ole Miss 30-24 to start a three-game win streak.
That victory was followed up by a 34-0 shutout of Austin Peay and a 49-27 victory at home to Auburn.
Kansas State Form
Kansas State lost three times in the regular season, finishing 9-3, but they came up big when it mattered most.
The Wildcats opened with a couple of one-sided wins, but suffered an early setback with a 17-10 loss to Tulane.
They rebounded immediately and did it impressively, knocking off #6 Oklahoma, 41-34, on the road.
Kansas State backed that up with a 37-28 win against Texas Tech and a 10-9 victory at Iowa State, but saw their run end with a 38-28 loss at #8 TCU.
The Wildcat’s response was a sensational 48-0 blowout of #9 Oklahoma State, but they failed to follow that up as they lost 34-27 to Texas.
They did win their final three games of the regular season though, setting them up for a revenge mission against TCU in the Big 12 Championship Game.
Kansas State got their revenge too, despite blowing an 11-point lead in the final 7:34 of regulation time.
Ty Zentner’s 31-yard field goal in overtime secured a 31-28 win for the Wildcats.
