Michigan sealed the #1 spot for the College Football Playoffs by going 12-0 in the regular season and winning the Big Ten Championship.
The Wolverines opened the season with three straight wins in non-conference play despite the absence of head coach Jim Harbaugh.
When Harbaugh returned to the sidelines they continued in that vein and stacked up a bunch of wins to reach 9-0.
Michigan were rocked when Harbaugh was again suspended by the league just hours before the game at #9 Penn State, but they responded to the adversity with a 24-15 victory.
The Wolverines then won 31-24 in Maryland, before returning home for a huge 30-24 win over #2 Ohio State that clinched a place in the conference championship.
They had Harbaugh back for that meeting with Iowa, and his defense was able to shut out the Hawkeyes in a 26-0 victory.
Alabama Form
Alabama overcame an early-season loss to put together and 11-1 regular season record and stun #1 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.
The Crimson Tide started the season in the top four in the rankings, but were knocked out of it following a 34-24 home loss to #11 Texas in September.
They rebounded quickly from that loss though, claiming their first win over a ranked team when they beat #15 Ole Miss, 24-10, later that month.
Alabama continued to stack up wins and in late October they ran out 34-20 winners against #17 Tennessee, before beating #13 LSU, 42-28, on November 4.
The Crimson Tide then closed out the regular season with three more wins, sealing a shot at #1 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.
They went into that game as underdogs against the back-to-back national champions, but they shook up the College Football Playoffs in stunning fashion with a 27-24 victory.
Verdict
It is tough to go against Michigan, but we have to take Alabama and the points in this one.
They ended Georgia’s long reign over College Football, and Nick Saban has shown time and time again that he knows how to get the job done under the brightest of lights.
